Ziggy Our Scarlet MacawThe Scarlet Macaw, also known as the Scarlet Macaw, is one of the most colorful birds that are available in the pet trade. In the wild they can live up to 40 years in forests all over Central America.
In captivity, they must have plenty of space to play and move around. They should also be provided with a variety of chew toys to strengthen their jaw muscles and beaks.
Ziggy's Story
Macaws, one of the largest species of parrots, are very beautiful. Beautiful birds and a joy to have. They require a large cage and plenty of outdoor time to play and exercise. They are active by nature and if they don't have enough activity they'll become bored and start self-mutilation and feather plucking. To keep them from becoming bored you should provide them with chew toys and surfaces to help trim their beaks. You can also use the cargo net of a parrot to allow your macaw to climb and play.
The scarlet macaw is a beautiful bird with large swatches in yellow, red blue, and red feathers. These brightly colored birds are well-known for their loud and boisterous calls. They emit squawks that are loud or chirps that can last for miles to call for their flockmates. Their strong beaks are suited for breaking into seeds, nuts, and other plant matter.
The scarlet macaw is indigenous to the rainforests in Central and South America including southeast Mexico. It prefers evergreen humid forests at altitudes from about 1,000 to 3,000 feet. They eat nuts, seeds and fruits, as well as leaves and berries. They can bond with humans if they are taught by hands from a young age. They may become aggressive during their breeding season.
A lone pet scarlet macaw can be a wonderful companion, but this bird could become focused on a single person and require an excessive amount of attention and interaction. It is best to train a young scarlet macaw from an early age to socialize with all members of the household. If a young scarlet macaw does not receive enough attention, it could get bored and take to self-mutilation.
They can also learn to speak. It is not advised to keep them in a home with children younger than 10 years old because they can bite. The macaw with scarlet eyes can have a vocabulary between five and 10 words. They are confident and often assertive, and they can be formidably aggressive during breeding season.
Ziggy's Habitat
Ziggy and the other three scarlet macaws share the large outdoor and indoor habitat. The space is equipped with an enormous flight wings, toys, feeders and a climbing wall. The birds are free to roam their habitat and interact with one another throughout the day. In the evening, macaws return to their hideouts where they eat dinner and new enrichment items to work on overnight.
A typical scarlet macaw can be around 15 years old in captivity. The birds are well-adapted to human contact. Their diets are designed to suit their species, and the birds enjoy a wide variety of fruits and vegetables, nuts and seeds. The macaws of scarlet also love to chew. A constant supply of sturdy toys that can withstand the powerful jaws and beaks of a parrot is essential for its health.
The macaw with the scarlet color can be found in Central and South America. Each pair stays together throughout their lives. The female lays three or two eggs inside the cavity of a tree between January and March. The eggs hatch within five weeks and the chicks depart their parents around one year after. The loud squawks of scarlet macaws allow them to communicate over long distances.
Utilizing techniques learned from the pet trade The zoo has also helped bolster scarlet macaw populations in wild. Zoo Knoxville's conservation efforts consist of offering egg incubation assisted hatching, hand rearing and parental care. Zoo Knoxville's staff educates public about wildlife conservation and animal care.

The scarlet Macaw is an extremely popular parrot in captivity. They are gorgeous birds, with large solid swatches of blue, red and yello feathers. They also have a strong personality. They love to fly and play with their owners, but they also need plenty of time outside or they can become depressed. This can lead to behavioral issues such as feather-picking, which could cause self-mutilation. They are fond of swings and items to enrich their lives, as well as special food for parrots that includes grains, seeds, and dried fruits.

Ziggy's Training
The striking feathers of the scarlet macaw and lively personality make it one of the most popular parrot species kept in captive settings. This large parrot is found in tropical rainforests throughout Central and South America.
They are monogamous birds that mate for life, typically beginning their breeding cycle about a year after they reach sexual maturity. The hen usually lays two or three white eggs in a tree's cavity, which hatch after about five weeks. The chicks emerge from the nest around 90 days after hatching, and leave their parents around one year after hatching.
These birds are ideal for those with the time and the resources to provide them with the best care. They are intelligent, social and can be taught many tricks and behavior. They are playful and curious, but can be noisy. Like all parrots, they require a healthy diet that includes a specially-formulated mix, fresh fruits, vegetables, as well as vegetables that are high in calcium such as the kale.
The scarlet macaw is primarily at risk from habitat destruction due to rainforest destruction, and a high rate of exploitation as an ornamental bird. They are also listed on the CITES Appendix I list which means that commercial trade with these birds is banned.
